What's Happening at the IEEE PES Power System Relaying Committee

What Is It and Why Is It Important To You?

The Power System Relaying Committee is one of the 17 Technical Committees reporting to the Technical Council of the Power and Energy Society. The scope of the committee is: Treatment of all matters in which the dominant factors are the application, design, construction, and operation of protective, regulating, monitoring, synchronism-check, synchronizing, reclosing, and auxiliary relays, including all matters necessary to the function of such relays and relaying systems employed in the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electrical energy and including the effects of such relays on system operation. Treatment of techniques and requirements for communications within, between, and among protective relays, to the extent that these communications affect protection functions or performance. Maintenance of liaison and collaboration as required with other committees of the Power & Energy Society and associated Groups and Societies of the IEEE. The PSRC is responsible for creating Guides, Standards, and report help in the design and application of relays.

Times have changed since the PSRC began to meet over 75 years ago. The PSRC will evolve with the changing requirements for relays from that of a single function protection device to a multifunction device that includes protection and control.

This presentation will look at what changes to expect in the coming years and highlight the work of the PSRC in the last year. It will give a brief description of reports now available through our website: www.pes-psrc.org . In addition, it will give the status of standards and guides now in progress, or recently completed.

Roger Hedding graduated with a BSEE from Marquette University, and a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Roger is a Senior Consultant for ABB. He guides the development of relay products, and applications for the ANSI market. Roger is an IEEE senior member, and Chair of the IEEE Power System Relay Committee. Roger has authored or co-authored many papers in power systems protection.
