DC Solar Plant Design Basics

Utility engineers today deal with an increasing number of solar plant interconnection requests. While most are familiar with the AC behavior of these plants, many are not involved at the DC level. This presentation will explore basic design considerations on the developer side of the Point of Interconnection (POI), such as site layout, tilt options, modules, DC conductors, and inverters.
Biren Patel is an Electrical Engineer and Project Manager with ten years of industry experience and is the owner of Biren Patel Engineering (BPE), a design firm specializing in Substations and Solar Plant engineering. BPE’s solar design experience includes several of the first multi-megawatt utility-scale plants in Georgia. Their substation experience includes designs and studies for Southern Company, Georgia Transmission, Florida Power and Light, Duke, and Entergy. Biren is an active member of IEEE, serving on the D5 Working Group on Lightning Protection, and serves on the executive committee for the Atlanta Power Electronics Society (PELS). Biren is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional and a registered Professional Engineer in 6 states. He earned a BSEE from Georgia Tech in 2005 and an MBA from the University of Georgia in 2012. He and his wife currently live in Macon, Georgia.
