The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is responsible for operating Australia's largest gas and electricity markets and power systems. The national electricity market (NEM) commenced operation as wholesale spot market in December 1998. It interconnects five regional market jurisdictions — Queensland, New South Wales (including the Australian Capital Territory), Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania. The National Electricity Market (NEM) operates on one of the world's longest interconnected power systems, stretching from Port Douglas in Queensland to Port Lincoln in South Australia and across the Bass Strait to Tasmania — a distance of around 5,000 kilometers.

This presentation will provide an overview of NEM. The presentation will focus on the electricity market dispatch and pricing. Types of ancillary services and its effect on electricity market will also be presented. Finally, the presentation will include future challenges for NEM.

The Presenter:

Brian is with National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCo) in Market Development when it was formed in 1997, leading to the commencement of the National Electricity Market (NEM) in December 1998. He moved back into a more technical role in the Planning Department where he managed production of the Statement of Opportunities, the Annual Interconnector Review and the first National Transmission Network Development Plan. Following formation of the Australian Energy Market Commission and Australian Energy Regulator, Brian moved into the new role of Head of Regulatory Affairs and Compliance covering rule changes, rules compliance and participant registration.

When AEMO was formed in 2009, Brian continued to manage rule changes and participant registrations which now covered the gas wholesale and retail markets operated by AEMO. He moved to the Senior Manager Electricity Market Operations Performance, managing development and performance of the central dispatch process and reviewing significant market operation events and incidents. He also managed the Market Analysis team, which was responsible for developing market analytics and insights into the operation of the market.

Brian is currently working in the Market Design team, managing AEMO's input into a number of rule changes and reviews, providing advice and expertise internally and to stakeholders on matters relating to market design, and mentoring the next generation of energy market experts.

After the AlphaGo winning game, there is a renewed interest in artificial intelligence, especially in the area of Deep Learning. This Webinar will give a general overview of Deep Learning and its potential application to power system analysis. It will include two parts. In the first part, an open platform for exploring the application of Deep Learning to power system analysis will be introduced, including the discussion of its system architecture, and some sample application scenarios. The platform is based on the integration of InterPSS, an open source power system simulation software project, and TensorFlow, Google's Deep Learning engine; In the second part, some of our recent research work in the area of applying Deep Learning to perform fast power system stability assessment will be presented. Different types of neural networks model, both steady-state and dynamic power system operation information as the neural networks model prediction input are studied for the assessment. Some preliminary results of applying Deep Learning to assess the stability of large-scale power networks will be presented.

The Presenters:

Dr. Mike Zhou

Dr. Mike Zhou obtained his B.S. from Hunan University, M.S. and PhD. from Tsinghua University. He was an assistant professor at University of Saskatchewan 1990-1992, served as the VP in charging of power distribution system software development at EDSA Micro Corporation 1992-1997. He was a Senior Computer System Architect with TIBCO Software Inc. 2000-2014. He joined State Grid Electric Power Research Institute of China as a Chief Scientist in 2014, sponsored by the "Thousand Talents Plan" program. His current research interests include Big Data and deep learning technologies, and their application to large-scale power grid on-line analysis.

SMUD implemented $350 million worth of smart grid projects that resulted in dramatic increases in the amount of available data. SMUD used the data to implement several initiatives in the areas of workforce and asset management, operational efficiencies, distributed energy resource management and customer programs. SMUD continues to use the data to improve grid performance and to develop programs focused on the customer side—SMUD’s customer analytics team worked on a load disaggregation model to identify customers with large HVAC usage, base loads and variable loads. The model empowered three data products: 1) a rank list of high potential customers who can benefit from SMUD’s offerings; 2) an internal app for energy auditors to provide personalized educational talking points when conduct audits; and 3) personalized marketing messages. By providing relevant and personalized messages and offerings, SMUD is building a better customer experience.

The Presenters:

Jim Parks

Jim Parks is a program manager in the Energy Research and Development department at the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). He just completed a $308 million smart grid initiative (SmartSacramento®) with over 40 individual projects ranging from smart meters and distribution automation to customer programs including demand response and energy efficiency. He currently oversees energy efficiency and smart grid R&D projects. Prior to his current assignment, he worked with emerging energy efficiency technologies, electric transportation, energy efficiency program development, energy efficiency program operations and transmission planning.

Yifan Lu is a project manager leading the customer analytic team at SMUD.
