PES Webinar - What's Happening at the IEEE PES Power Systems Relaying Committee

IEEE Power & Energy Society Webinar Series

What's happening at the IEEE PES Power System Relaying Committee

What Is It and Why Is It Important To You?

March 26, 2014 2 p.m eastern

Presented by Roger Hedding of ABB, Chairman of PSRC

Info and registration: http://www.ieee-pes.org/webinar-pes-psrc-march-2014

This webinar:

The Power System Relaying Committee is one of the 17 Technical Committees reporting to the Technical Council of the Power and Energy Society. The scope of the committee is: Treatment of all matters in which the dominant factors are the application, design, construction, and operation of protective, regulating, monitoring, synchronism-check, synchronizing, reclosing, and auxiliary relays, including all matters necessary to the function of such relays and relaying systems employed in the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electrical energy and including the effects of such relays on system operation. Treatment of techniques and requirements for communications within, between, and among protective relays, to the extent that these communications affect protection functions or performance. Maintenance of liaison and collaboration as required with other committees of the Power & Energy Society and associated Groups and Societies of the IEEE. The PSRC is responsible for creating Guides, Standards, and report help in the design and application of relays.

Times have changed since the PSRC began to meet over 75 years ago. The PSRC will evolve with the changing requirements for relays from that of a single function protection device to a multifunction device that includes protection and control.

This presentation will look at what changes to expect in the coming years and highlight the work of the PSRC in the last year. It will give a brief description of reports now available through our website: www.pes-psrc.org . In addition, it will give the status of standards and guides now in progress, or recently completed.

PES Webinar - Strategic Telecom Planning for Smart Grid: Minimize CAPEX and OPEX, and Ensure Success

IEEE Power  Energy Society Webinar Series

Strategic Telecom Planning for Smart Grid:
Minimize CAPEX and OPEX, and Ensure Success

May 22, 2014 2 p.m eastern

Presented by: Amar Patel and Hugo Bashualdo of Siemens Power Technologies International

Info and Registration: http://www.ieee-pes.org/webinar-telecom-planning-smart-grid-may-2014

This Webinar:

One of the components that can make or break a Smart Grid (SG) deployment is the design of the underlying telecommunications network that’s used to support functions such as protection, control, real time operation, and SCADA.  An improper telecom strategy and design invariably leads to high O&M costs, reliability problems, network downtime, exorbitant capital spending, and reduced ability to extract maximum benefit and efficiency from the SG application.  In order to avoid these undesirable situations, a strategic telecom planning study should be performed as one of the earliest steps of any SG project.

The study should assess different communication technologies and architectures on the basis of: (1) coverage; (2) operational performance; (3) cost; (4) compliance with standards and regulatory agencies; and (5) security.  Consultants/engineers vary in their choice of different tools and methodologies to assess these items – with each leading to different degrees of accuracy in the analysis.  How can you ensure you take the right approach to telecom planning, and ensure the success of your Smart Grid project?

Managers and engineers involved with technology integration, distribution, asset management, and telecom will benefit from this webinar.

The ABC's of EV's

August 28, 2014 3:00pm Eastern

Presented by Eric Sortomme, Senior Power Systems Engineer, Alstom Grid

Info and registration: http://www.ieee-pes.org/webinar-young-professionals

This Webinar:

Electric vehicles (EVs) have the potential to reduce fossil fuel consumption and increase energy independence. If their charging is managed properly, they can also be a tool for fortifying the grid and increasing the integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. However there are many differences in the ownership experience between a traditional internal combustion vehicle and an EV. These range from maintenance requirements and daily refueling, to road tripping and group charging with other EV owners. This presentation will focus on the various issues associated with daily EV usage and EV ownership. This information is important to consider when planning for mass EV adoption. It is also important to convey to the public so they are more informed about life with an EV.

PES Webinar - New Approaches for the Control of Future Low Voltage Distribution Networks - October 2014

IEEE Power & Energy Society Webinar Series

New Approaches for the Control of Future Low Voltage Distribution Networks

October 28, 2014 11:00 a.m eastern

Presented by Dr. Luis (Nando) Ochoa
The University of Manchester

Information and Registration: http://www.ieee-pes.org/webinar-low-voltage-distribution-networks-oct-2014

This Webinar:

The increasing and future adoption of small-to-medium scale low carbon technologies such as wind power, photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles and electric heat pumps is and will pose significant technical and economic challenges on distribution networks. Low voltage distribution networks have been designed to have no controllability and hence are largely unmonitored. However, it is likely that they will become one of the first bottlenecks towards the decarbonisation of our power systems.

This presentation will first introduce the potential problems or impacts of different penetrations of low carbon technologies on LV networks using a Monte Carlo approach to cater for the corresponding uncertainties involved. It will then present and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of some of the potential solutions that might allow higher penetrations without the need of traditional reinforcements. The work is based on different industrial projects hence it will provide insights on real UK LV networks as well as the trialed technologies.

Those involved in electrical distribution, including engineers, consultants, researchers, and electricity distribution companies will gain insights from this webinar.
