IEEE Power & Energy Society Technical Webinar Series

How the Cloud Can Transform the Energy Business: the Future Internet Approach

March 17, 2015  11:00 am eastern

Presented by Antonello Monti, RWTH Aachen University

Info and registration details: http://www.ieee-pes.org/webinar-cloud-transform-energy-biz-march-2015

This Webinar: The changes in the energy arena call for more and more ICT in the operation and infrastructure of modern utilities. In particular, the idea of a "customer-centric" grid is completely transforming the relation between energy providers and end-users based on the possibillity of bi-directional data exchange.

While most research has targeted specific technical issues of the so called "Smart Grid," very little attention has been paid to the definition of a comprehensive, flexible, scalable and reusable ICT platform to deliver innovative energy services. However, this platform concept is a pre-requisite for a real interoperability.

This webinar will present some recent key developments in the so-called Future Internet area, supporting innovative approaches to energy service deployment. Seven large field trials across Europe, involving some of the most important utilities, will be presented to demonstrate that such a platform is becoming a reality.

The goal of the presentation is to share these practical experiences and to document the path towards the creation of an energy-focused standardized software platform as a practical enabler of future energy services.

PES Webinar: State of Power Engineering Education in the U.S. and Canada: Overview of the 2013-2014 University Survey Results June 2015

IEEE Power & Energy Society Webinar Series

State of Power Engineering Education in the U.S. and Canada:
Overview of the 2013-2014 University Survey Results

June 2, 2015 3:00 p.m eastern

Presented by Dennis Ray, Power Systems Engineering Research Center

Information and registration: http://ieee-pes.org/pes-webinar-survey-results-june-2015

This webinar:

For over 40 years, the Power & Energy Education Committee of the IEEE PES has periodically conducted a survey of universities in the U.S. and Canada. The objectives of a revised on-line survey for the 2013-2014 academic year were to gather information about curriculum and faculty from electrical engineering, four year institutions (1) to promote power engineering careers and education opportunities, (2) to facilitate advancement in power engineering education, and (3) to assess the state of power engineering education and research from a national perspective. The results show that student interest in power and energy engineering has almost doubled since the 2005-2006 survey and that faculty numbers have grown to produce a healthier percentage of young professors. Future challenges are how to best prepare for the coming wave of retirements of experienced faculty, and to understand and respond to the issues associated with high dependency on government support for power engineering research.

University faculty and students; industry engineers, management, and human relations professionals; and government personnel interested in energy workforce development will benefit from this webinar.

Presented by Kevin Maynard P.E.
Technical Leader, Eaton Corporation

Info and Registration: http://www.ieee-pes.org/webinar-young-professionals-becoming-a-pe

This Webinar:

A great deal of people are aware of the process and path towards degrees in higher education though not as many people know the process and path towards obtaining your professional engineer certification. This talk will provide a road map of how to obtain a professional engineers license using several case studies across the United States. An attendee will see the benefit of obtaining the certification from both a career growth and educational stand point. An attendee will also be able to identify if their career choices would be enhanced by achieving professional certification. Topics of discussion will also include preparation techniques for the FE and the PE, ways to document design experience, and engineering ethics law after you have your license. Recent graduates and engineers in the first 5 years of their careers should attend this webinar. All engineers interested in professional growth will benefit by attendance at this webinar.

IEEE PES Webinar Series: A Condensed History of IEEE and PES July 2015

IEEE Power & Energy Society Webinar Series

A Condensed History of IEEE and PES

July 6, 2015 2:00pm Eastern

Presented by Robert A. Dent, PES History Committee Chair

Info and Registration: http://www.ieee-pes.org/pes-webinar-ieee-pes-history-july-2015

This Webinar:

This webinar provides a brief exposition of the two founding institutes of IEEE: AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers) and IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers). It will describe the formation of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) through the merger of AIEE and IRE. AIEE had a strong technical component in power engineering, however, after the merger there was a recognized need for a power group which eventually became PES (Power & Energy Society). The webinar concludes with a review of PES today and its success.

Anyone interested in the history of technology, especially electric power engineering, will find this webinar of interest.

Smart Village- Going Beyond the Light Bulb

November 10, 2015 12:00pm eastern

Presented by: Nirupama Prakash Kumar - Product Manager, Business Development, NextEra Energy Resources

This Webinar:

This webinar will introduce IEEE Smart Village and its various initiatives to achieve its vision. IEEE Smart Village has been striving to get basic electrical services to a million people in 5 years, in the most underserved regions of the world, through renewable energy sources. Its ultimate goal is to get electrical services to 50 million people in the next 10 years. However, IEEE Smart Village aims to go beyond just lighting and electrical services. Through its model of partnerships with local NGOs and Entrepreneurs, it strives to create local businesses and local jobs. Through its initiatives in education and community based solutions, it aims to create community development with lasting change. All these initiatives make IEEE Smart Village unique, in the sense that it is going ‘beyond the light bulb’ to create truly Smart Villages around the world.
