In this webinar we will discuss the DOE project related to Optimal Reconfiguration and Resilient Control Framework for Real-Time Photovoltaic Dispatch to Manage Critical Infrastructure (ReDis-PV). The project will develop a grid management tool that detects cyber and physical threats, and forms dynamic clusters to optimally manage photovoltaic and energy. The core of the project that allows management and control of DERs to support critical infrastructure is the main theme of the presentation. The webinar includes the technical details and overall implementation methods.

The objective of this PES Webinar is to showcase and increase the visibility of the Top 5 papers selected in 2021 among the ones published in the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. The IEEE-TSG is a cross disciplinary journal aimed at disseminating results of research on and development of the smart grid, which encompasses energy networks where prosumers, electric transportation, distributed energy resources, and communications are integral and interactive components, as in the case of microgrids and active distribution networks interfaced with transmission systems.

The future transformation of mass transportation is set to fundamentally shape our modern civilization in reducing the global energy consumption from travel and the time needed to move. Evacuated tube transport in airless tunnels is currently viewed as the fastest and cleanest way to cross the earth’s surface. However, as a result of recent marketing hypes, not enough explanation of its core technologies has been provided to understand its feasibility fully. Still, the main challenge is dealing with its high infrastructure needs, which makes the technology difficult to scale up. Even though you can make the ride perfect, you still need enough throughput to pay back the cost of active propulsion and suspension components. This presentation presents a technical path for an affordable subsonic transportation system to speed up future technology implementation.

Grid-Forming Inverters

Topic: Grid-Forming Inverters

Presented by: Wei Du

This presentation will be a journey from a single microgrid to an integrated transmission & distribution system with 10,000+ inverters.
The presentation includes three parts. First, it will review the basic concepts of droop control and share the field experience on how CERTS Microgrid deals with overload events through autonomous control design. Second, it will provide a comparative study of two widely used grid-forming controls—single- and multi-loop droop controls. An insight will be provided to help understand the differences between the two widely used control strategies. EMT simulation, small signal analysis, and HIL testing will be provided to verify and explain this understanding. Finally, this presentation will share some simulation work performed on an integrated T&D co-simulation platform that has 10,000+ grid-forming and grid-following inverters leveraging the U.S. DOE invested open-source tools. The stability boundary identified through this case study will be discussed.
