Webinar Description: Many power equipment failures and short-circuit incidents are preceded with incipient faults. Such faults often leave unique "marks" on the voltage and current waveforms. In recent years, engineers and researchers in the fields of power quality, power system protection and equipment condition monitoring have all recognized that such unique "marks" or waveform signatures can be used to detect the occurrence of incipient faults. Thus a proactive approach to power system protection may become a reality.

This webinar will present the state-of-the-art developments in the area of incipient fault detection, primarily from the perspective of power quality (PQ) monitoring. PQ monitors are probably the most versatile waveform recording devices and PQ analysis is essentially waveform analysis. As such, PQ monitoring platforms may represent the easiest way to realize "incipient fault detection on a budget".

This webinar will also explain a recent technical report completed by the PES WG on Power Quality Data Analytics, PES-TR-73: "Electrical Signatures of Power Equipment Failures". The webinar will further discuss, frankly, the limitations of existing techniques and the various paths to move forward in this important direction.

Presenter BioDr. Wilsun Xu, is a professor at the University of Alberta, Canada. He obtained PhD from the University of British Columbia, Canada in 1989 and worked in BC Hydro from 1990 to 1996. Dr. Xu is an expert in power quality and an IEEE fellow for contributions to the field of power system harmonics. In recent years, Dr. Xu championed international efforts to expand the use of PQ monitoring and analysis to areas such as incipient fault detection. Driving by this vision, he helped to establish the IEEE PES WG on Power Quality Data Analytics in 2014 and served as its first chair.

Since joining GRC, his focus has been on electric machines for hybrid aviation, as well as renewable power generation. For the previous 28 years he worked on or led teams developing and testing new air and hydrogen-cooled turbo-generators, with roles in both engineering and manufacturing quality. Mr. Yagielski has been an IEEE member for 25 years and is currently the Chair of the Power & Energy Society's Electric Machine Committee

This presentation will provide an overview of the whitepaper's results, focusing on the impact COVID-19 has had on the electric grid and the general industry, along with best practices for mitigation of the pandemic's effects. Generating, transmitting and distributing electricity is a critical service, not just for the industry, but for the communities who rely upon safe, reliable power. The ideas, strategies, and best practices emerging in the energy industry during this crisis also have the potential to provide insight on how the industry can evolve to meet a transforming electric grid in an increasingly digital world.


Presenter Bio:
Dr. Aleksi Paaso is Director of Distribution Planning, Smart Grid & Innovation at Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), the electric utility serving Northern Illinois, including city of Chicago. He is responsible for ComEd's distribution planning activities, distributed energy resource interconnection, as well as Smart Grid strategy and project execution. He is a senior member of the IEEE and Technical Co-Chair for the 2020 IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Kentucky.

Abstract
The panel will focus on reviewing in some detail the “Microgrid Stability Definitions, Analysis, and Modeling” TF report, sponsored by the IEEE PES Power System Dynamic Performance Committee. Thus, the proposed microgrid stability definitions and classification will be first presented. The various models of the different microgrid components such as diesel generators, converters, RES, and associated controls, feeders, load models, and energy storage, will also be discussed, as well as the analysis techniques and tools used for stability studies. Finally, various examples of stability problems, controls, and modeling will be presented.

 

Presenters:

1. Dr. Claudio Cañizares is a University Professor and Hydro One Endowed Chair at the ECE Department of the University of Waterloo. His highly cited research focuses on modeling, simulation, computation, stability, control, and optimization of power and energy systems. He is the IEEE Trans. Smart Gird EIC, a Fellow of the IEEE, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a leader of multiple PES technical groups, and the recipient of multiple IEEE PES awards

2. Dr. Mostafa Farrokhabadi is the Senior Director of Technology at BluWave-ai and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. He is experienced in designing mission critical grid solutions for industry and academia and has (co)authored several high-impact articles and patents on control and optimization of smart grids.

3. Dr. Reinaldo Tonkoski is Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, South Dakota State University, and a Visiting Faculty at Sandia National Laboratories. He is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy and IEEE ACCESS. His research group is specialized in power electronics and controls applied to power systems.

4. Dr. Mario Paolone received the M.Sc. (Hons.) and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1998 and 2002. From 2005 to 2011, he was assistant professor in power systems with the University of Bologna. Since 2011, he is full professor with the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland.

5. Dr. Richard Wies, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, leads research focused on the engineering challenges of renewable energy integration in remote islanded microgrids in collaboration with the Alaska Center for Energy and Power.

6. Dr. Nikos Hatziargyriou is Professor in Power Systems at the National Technical University of Athens. Until 2019 he was Chair and CEO of the Hellenic DNO and he has been Deputy CEO of the Public Power Utility, responsible for Transmission and Distribution. He is a Fellow Member of IEEE, past Chair of the Power System Dynamic Performance Committee (PSDPC), and Editor in Chief of the IEEE Trans on Power Systems.
