IEEE PES Partnership with AEMO
IEEE, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) collaborate to transform Grid Operation
Piscataway, N.J. – IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to address power system operations challenges driven by an evolving resource mix, ageing infrastructure, weather, emerging technologies, consumer choices and interdependencies between gas and electricity markets.
The MOU was officially signed into order by Frank Lambert, 2021 PES President, and Michael Gatt, AEMO Chief Operations Officer. As a newest participant in the PES Corporate Engagement Program, AEMO will work together with PES to achieve the goals of improving, guiding, innovating, and promoting the development of technology and standards.
“Per capita, Australia is leading the world in the uptake of renewable generation double the rate of our nearest rival, Germany, and 10 times the world average. The MOU is a big step towards collaborating with a key international professional organization in the area of power system operation with high uptake of inverter-based resources (IBR) and low levels of synchronous generation. This collaboration would help the transformation of power system operation and control,” said Gatt.
“With electric power technologies advancing at such a tremendous pace, the MOU will help to ensure that the best technical knowledge will help AEMO as it seeks to shape a better energy future for all Australians. This is a milestone effort for IEEE and PES because it demonstrated our global collaboration and unbiased, independent technical leadership to the worldwide electrical power and energy industry,” said Lambert.
As a formal agreement, the MOU helps align the two organizations' efforts in conducting standards workshops, seminars on power and energy fields of interest; encourage individuals to contribute articles, participate in the editorial, and review processes for IEEE PES transactions (PETS), magazines, newsletter, and other opportunities. The PES University curriculum will be made available to AEMO employees and AEMO can also offer experts to provide instruction for the IEEE PES global community.

- Resource Sharing
- Educational Opportunities
- Awards and Humanitarian Activities
AEMO and IEEE recognize the importance of establishing and strengthening their relationship and both parties wish to foster closer cooperation resulting in the development of a long-term, peer-to-peer relationship for their mutual benefit.
The PES Corporate Engagement Program (CEP) is a world-wide program intended to engage the Industry Organizations in IEEE PES activities in a formal way; facilitate involvement of corporate employees in the IEEE PES activities and involve corporate leaders to support PES membership/programs.
