IEEE Celebrates 100-Year Anniversary of the IEEE Power & Energy Society Transformers Committee

A century of efforts from IEEE PES Transformers Committee members delivers over 100 published IEEE Standards.

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY, USA, 26 March 2018 – IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, and the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the IEEE PES Transformers Committee with a reception held 25 March 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event was attended by PES dignitaries and attendees of the IEEE PES Transformers Committee 2018 Spring Meeting.

The predecessor to the IEEE PES Transformers Committee was launched in 1918 under the auspices of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) Committee of Standardization, created in 1899 as the forerunner to today’s IEEE and tasked with recommending standard practices and definitions for electrical apparatus.

Throughout its history, the IEEE PES Transformers Committee has included many talented professionals and industry leaders whose efforts have advanced the state of the art in transformers, making them more efficient and reliable as power generation, transmission and distribution technologies have evolved. Since their invention, power transformers have become essential for the transmission, distribution, and utilization of alternating current electrical energy. They have a vital role in current power systems. The first standalone standard attributed to The IEEE PES Transformers Committee was published in 1925 entitled: AIEE Transformer Standard 13-1925—Standard for Transformers, Induction Regulators and Reactors.

"When looking at the IEEE PES Transformers Committee today, we recognize that it is a result of the past and present work of many dedicated and diverse volunteers," said Susan McNelly, chair, IEEE PES Transformers Committee. "As we look forward to the next 100 years, our Committee will continue to face challenges in our efforts to keep up with and recognize technological advances in our industry and how best to coordinate and harmonize these efforts with other standards organizations around the world."

To date, IEEE PES has been responsible for the publication of 581 of the IEEE’s 1,267 active standards, with 104 standards resulting from Project Authorization Requests (PARs) created by The IEEE PES Transformers Committee. Additionally, the IEEE, through the IEEE PES, the IEEE PES Transformers Committee, and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), works collaboratively with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), resulting in the publication of joint global standards that include:

Work is currently underway on two new joint IEEE/IEC technical standards, as well as a revision to the existing IEEE C57.15/IEC 60076-21—Power Transformers Part 21: Standard Requirements, Terminology, and Test Code for Step-Voltage Regulators. Currently, the IEEE-SA has 652 active PARs—283 under the IEEE PES that includes 51 from the IEEE PES Transformers Committee.

"It’s rewarding to share in celebrating a century’s worth of hard work and remarkable achievements that have driven the advancement of power generation and energy supply, storage, and distribution," said Saifur Rahman, president, IEEE PES. "The IEEE PES Transformers Committee exemplifies how the collaborative structure within IEEE can be brought to bear in the development of global standards-based technology that advances technology in line with the Institute’s overall mission to benefit all of humanity."

IEEE PES, under its More Power to the Future™" initiative, has established a framework for advancing standards leadership, education in the workforce, and global participation, while staying abreast of industry activity trends and actively participating in regulatory initiatives.
