IEEE Smart Grid Coordination Meeting

IEEE volunteers and staff members, including representatives from the IEEE Power & Energy Society, met on 27–28 August 2009 in Piscataway, New Jersey to investigate ways to leverage the strength of the IEEE to better serve the engineering community in the area of Smart Grid. Among the topics covered were plans for an IEEE Smart Grid Web Portal and the development of Virginia Tech's Smart Grid Information Clearinghouse. Both web sites are being designed to provide the user with access to comprehensive and up-to-date information. Also discussed were the latest Standards development activities related to Smart Grid, recent regulatory and legislative developments in the United States, the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid whose first issue will appear in 2010, and the upcoming IEEE PES Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies to be held in Gaithersburg, Maryland on 19–21 January 2010.

The attendees were: Wanda Reder (IEEE Power & Energy Society President, NTDC Smart Grid Chair, and S&C Electric Company), Chuck Adams (IEEE Standards Association President), William Ash (IEEE Standards Activities), Gailanne Barth (IEEE Corporate Strategy and Communications), Miroslav Begovic (Georgia Institute of Technology), Marko Delimar (IEEE Region 8 Director-Elect), Erich Gunther (EnerNex), Bichlien Hoang (IEEE Technical Activities), Russell Lefevre (IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee), Karen McCabe (IEEE Standards Activities), Manisa Pipattanasomporn (Virginia Tech – Advanced Research Institute), Tom Prevost (Weidmann Diagnostic Solutions, Inc.), Patrick Ryan (IEEE Power & Energy Society), Mohammad Shahidehpour (Illinois Institute of Technology), William Tonti (IEEE Technical Activities), Susan Vogel (IEEE Standards Activities), Mary Ward-Callan (IEEE Technical Activities), and Peter Wiesner (IEEE Technical Activities).
