The Path of the Smart Grid by Hassan Farhangi emphasizes that Smart Grid cannot and should not be a replacement for the existing electricity grid, but a complement to it. The article makes the argument that a topology for the Smart Grid that allows for organic growth, inclusion of forward looking technologies, and full backward compatibility with the existing legacy systems is a necessity.
