P&E Magazine - September 2008
"In My View" Column
The September P&E Magazine In My View column by Ralph Masiello reflects on the development of phasor measurement units (PMU) and concludes that it, coupled with the development of microprocessor based protection, may well be the most significant development in T&D technology in the recent past. He makes that reliability as a driver is acceptable in the wake of a system disaster but is less so as time passes. In the wake of this conclusion, he offers some cost benefit analyses that are made possible with the utilization of wide area measurement systems (WAMS), a provoking thought asking for further discussion, which should be sent to molken@ieee.org.
