Election of PES Officers
Later this year the voting membership of the IEEE Power &
Energy Society (PES) will have the opportunity to elect our future leadership.
The offices of president-elect, secretary, and treasurer for the period
2010–2011 will be decided. Two candidates, nominated by the PES
Nominations and Appointments Committee, chaired by past President John
McDonald, and approved by the Governing Board, are contesting each office.
Their photos,
bios, and candidate statements are available.
The successful candidates will serve for the period
2010–2011.
Voting members of the Power & Energy Society may, by
petition, propose names to be added to the ballot for these offices. Details
for this procedure and qualifications for proposed candidates may be found in
the PES Bylaws. To be eligible for nomination to the office of president-elect,
the nominee shall have served as a member of the PES Governing Board in some
capacity for at least two years. More information is available.
Further details will follow in ensuing e-Newsletters and
in IEEE Power & Energy Magazine.
PES Website
An ambitious project, spearheaded by Edina Bajrektarevic and
Henry Louie, is underway to update the PES Website to meet the challenges faced
by our industry and by PES. The newly designed website is scheduled to be
introduced in the second quarter of this year. Details
about the project are posted.
125th Anniversary
Celebration events commemorating the joint 125th
anniversaries of IEEE and PES will take place throughout this year. Further
news will be posted as received. President Wanda Reder provided an overview of
the year’s activities in the Leader’s Corner column in the January
2009 issue of Power & Energy Magazine. For reference, that column
is posted. In addition updates and further information may be found at http://www.ieee125.org/
2010 Boy Scout Jamboree

HP-35 Scientific Calculator Awarded IEEE Milestone
IEEE announced that it has recognized the HP-35 scientific
calculator as an IEEE Milestone. Introduced in 1972, the HP-35 was the
world’s first handheld-sized scientific calculator which ultimately made
the slide rule, which had previously been used by generations of engineers and
scientists, obsolete. A Milestone plaque will be permanently displayed at HP
Labs in Palo Alto, Calif., the site where the HP-35 was originally developed.
The news
release is available.
One Voice Video
The "IEEE: One Voice" Video is aimed at making those in the
technology community feel proud to be part of IEEE, and encourage those who are
not affiliated with IEEE to feel good about the contributions of technology to
society. The video is the result of work by the Public Visibility Initiative
Ad-hoc Committee, under the leadership of 2008 Committee Chair Leah Jamieson.
Specific formats of IEEE One Voice Video are available.

P&E Magazine - May/June
2009
"In My View" Column
The May/June P&E Magazine In
My View column, “Starring Role for Relays” by Stan Horowitz
sets the stage for looking at the future by offering a compendium of the past,
which brings us to the present. He then reviews the necessary integration of
what we regard today as the traditional protection, control, metering and
communications that will be the backbone of tomorrow’s grid. Stan’s
insights offer a look at the future structure of the PES Technical Committees
that must result from this new order. Further discussion is encouraged and
should be sent to molken@ieee.org.
We also welcome In My View column contributions from our
readers and anyone interested in accepting this offer may contact me for
details molken@ieee.org.
