Stimulus Bill Update
   
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signed by President Obama on 17 February will have a profound effect on our industries and professions. In their 2004 Memorandum of Understanding, the GridWise Alliance and the U.S. Department of Energy agreed to work together to realize the vision of a transformed national electricity grid. The Gridwise Action Plan, resulting from that MOU, is available as a road map for the future. Required reading by all PES members.

PES Website
  
An ambitious project, spearheaded by Edina Bajrektarevic and Henry Louie, is underway to update the PES Website to meet the challenges faced by our industry and by PES. The newly designed website is scheduled to be introduced in the second quarter of this year. Details about the project are posted.

2009 PES Elections
   
The 2010-11 PES officer positions of President-elect, Secretary, and Treasurer will be contested in an election later this year. At its January 2009 meeting, the PES Governing Board approved the recommendation of candidates proposed by the Nominations and Appointments Committee chaired by Past President John D. McDonald. The candidates are:

President-elect
Chen-Ching Liu
Noel N. Schulz

Secretary
Erich Gunther
Christopher E. Root

Treasurer
Miroslav Begovic
Nelson Segoshi

   Voting members of the Power & Energy Society may, by petition, propose names to be added to the ballot for these offices. Details for this procedure and qualifications for proposed candidates may be found in the PES Bylaws. To be eligible for nomination to the office of president-elect, the nominee shall have served as a member of the PES Governing Board in some capacity for at least two years. More information is available.

Joint Technical Committee Meeting
  The 2009 Joint Technical Committee Meeting was held in Atlanta, GA, USA from 11-15 January. A report of that meeting, accompanied by a photo collage, prepare by Meetings VP John Paserba is available.

125th Anniversary
   Celebration events commemorating the joint 125th anniversaries of IEEE and PES will take place throughout this year. Further news will be posted as received. President Wanda Reder provided an overview of the year’s activities in the Leader’s Corner column in the January 2009 issue of Power & Energy Magazine. For reference, that column is posted. 2010 Boy Scout Jamboree
  PES is a financial sponsor of the Electricity Merit Booth at the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree. Volunteers for this event are needed and detailed information is available.

IEEE News
New IEEE Executive Director
  Dr. E. James (Jim) Prendergast has been named IEEE Executive Director and will assume his new position on 6 April 2009. Prendergast will serve as chief operating officer and will manage the more than 1,000 IEEE staff members at seven U.S. and overseas locations. Prendergast most recently served as vice president and chief technology officer for DuPont Electronic and Communication Technologies. A native Australian, Jim received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Sydney and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge. A full press release is available.

IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society Sign Merger Agreement
  IEEE signed a merger agreement with the honor society ETA Kappa Nu (HKN), a nonprofit, public-service organization comprising nearly 200 university chapters. The merger, which will go into effect by mid-2009 pending final approval, will make HKN the official honor society of IEEE, recognizing scholarship and academic excellence and identifying student leaders, young professionals and eminent scholars in the IEEE’s technical fields of interest.

   Under the agreement, HKN will become an organizational unit of IEEE, governed by the new IEEE-HKN Board of Governors. A restricted endowment will be created in the IEEE Foundation to support HKN’s educational, societal, and recognition activities. In addition to holding HKN’s current assets, the new endowment will receive an initial donation of US$1.2M from IEEE. The full press release is available
