Worth Another Look
IEEE Power Engineering Medal

IEEE has established a new prestigious award, the IEEE Power Engineering Medal. The medal and a 20,000 USD stipend will be awarded initially at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in 2010. Nominations for this award, sponsored by the IEEE Power & Energy, Industry Applications, Power Electronics and Industrial Engineering Societies are being solicited and submission is required by 1 July. Full details are available.

Election of PES Officers

Later this year the voting membership of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) will have the opportunity to elect our future leadership. The offices of president-elect, secretary, and treasurer for the period 2010–2011 will be decided. Two candidates, nominated by the PES Nominations and Appointments Committee, chaired by past President John McDonald, and approved by the Governing Board, are contesting each office. Their photos, bios, and candidate statements are available. The successful candidates will serve for the period 2010–2011.

Voting members of the Power & Energy Society may, by petition, propose names to be added to the ballot for these offices. Details for this procedure and qualifications for proposed candidates may be found in the PES Bylaws. To be eligible for nomination to the office of president-elect, the nominee shall have served as a member of the PES Governing Board in some capacity for at least two years. More information is available.

Further details will follow in ensuing e-Newsletters and in IEEE Power & Energy Magazine.

125th Anniversary
Celebration events commemorating the joint 125th anniversaries of IEEE and PES will take place throughout this year. Further news will be posted as received. President Wanda Reder provided an overview of the year’s activities in the Leader’s Corner column in the January 2009 issue of Power & Energy Magazine. For reference, that column is posted. In addition updates and further information may be found at http://www.ieee125.org/.

P&E Magazine - May/June 2009
"In My View" Column
The May/June P&E Magazine In My View column, “Starring Role for Relays” by Stan Horowitz sets the stage for looking at the future by offering a compendium of the past, which brings us to the present. He then reviews the necessary integration of what we regard today as the traditional protection, control, metering and communications that will be the backbone of tomorrow’s grid. Stan’s insights offer a look at the future structure of the PES Technical Committees that must result from this new order. Further discussion is encouraged and should be sent to molken@ieee.org.

We also welcome In My View column contributions from our readers and anyone interested in accepting this offer may contact me for details molken@ieee.org.
