IEEE News
IEEE Encourages Consumers to Learn about the Analog to Digital Broadcast Transition
For the last nine years, the US broadcast industry has been preparing for a fundamental shift in the way that broadcast signals are delivered to the American public. The actual full-power transition from analog television to exclusive use of digital television formally began in May 1999 and will be completed on February 17, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. when all full power analog signals are to be turned off. Read the full press release.

Innovation in Danger: Not Enough Students Pursuing Engineering Careers
Thought Leaders from IEEE met to discuss current issues in Education, from engaging youth to encouraging, attracting and retaining engineering talent The trend is alarming, and it’s global. In Western Europe, Australia, Japan and even in India, the numbers of students attracted to engineering and computer science are declining. For example, a 2003 Harris poll conducted in the U.S. shows that only two percent of first year university students (and less than one percent of young women) want to major in computer science. The full press release is available.

Chapter 'Doings'
Region 9 (Latin America)
Bogata, Columbia was the site of a Region Chapter Chair meeting on 16 August 2008. A report of the events of that meeting is available.

Western Saudi Arabia
On 27 October 2008, the Western Saudi Arabia PES Chapter met at Kink Abdulaziz University. Chapter chair Bander Allef provides a report of that meeting.

Standards
IEEE Standard C37.2 Updated
The document, Standard Electrical Power Device Function Numbers, was adopted by AIEE in 1928 as AIEE No. 26. A joint working group of the PES Substations and Power System Relaying Committees has recently updated the standard. John Tengdin, a member of the updating group, offers a historical perspective into the background behind the original intent and the revisions that have ensued. His most interesting presentation is posted

P&E Magazine - November 2008
"In My View" Column
The November P&E Magazine In My View column by Richard McMahon of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) is entitled Alliance of Energy Suppliers, Expanding the Role of Renewables  and offers an insight into the US Utilities views on the subject. Mr. McMahon reviews the present status of renewable sources, together with the issues and challenges associated with the sources themselves and their integration into the present day grid. He is an advocate for the development and deployment of a full portfolio of advanced technologies that include energy efficiency in both supply and demand. Further discussion is encouraged and should be sent to molken@ieee.org.

Accomplished PES Members Recognized
New Senior Members
At its November meeting in New Brunswick, NJ, USA the IEEE Admissions and Advancement Committee recommended the elevation of a number of PES members to the grade of Senior Member. Their names and sections are posted.
