Tryengineering.org is a portal about
engineering and
engineering careers. It is designed to encourage young people to
explore what
it means to be an engineer. This website is a joint effort between IEEE
and
IBM. We are looking for engineers working in the power industry to

Worth Another Look

Women in Engineering – You Can Do It!
A seminar was sponsored by the IEEE
Power & Energy Society
(PES) Women in Engineering (WiE) in Abu Dhabi on October 29, 2009. PES
Governing Board members, Wanda Reder, Noel Schulz, Cheryl Warren, and
Meliha
Selak, were guest lecturers who shared their stories about career,
work-family
balance, importance of IEEE to their success, and the need for women in
the
power and energy industry. There were approximately 200 women in the
audience
who enthusiastically asked questions, shared their experiences of
engineering
studies in the UAE and openly discussed their challenges to overcome
adversity.
On that day, something magical happened
in Abu Dhabi...there
was a meeting of women from different parts of the world; a meeting of
their
minds, their hopes, their dreams, and a deep sharing that changed the
parties
forever. As a tribute to that day, to the women who participated and to
the
hope that is inspired by simple acts of kindness, Cheryl Warren wrote
the
on-line book titled “Women in
Engineering – You
Can Do It!”
Two Transactions To Debut in 2010
PES will sponsor two IEEE Transactions

2010. These will be the first Transactions that PES has sponsored since
1986.
They are the IEEE

Chapters Department Reorganization
Chapters VP Melhia Selak announced a
reorganization of the
Chapters Department. Of greatest significance is the appointment of an
individual Chapter Regional Representative for each of the 10 IEEE
Regions. Her

P&E
Magazine - March/April 2010
"In My View" Column
The March/April P&E Magazine In
My View column is Time to Speak up!
by David Owens, Executive
Vice President of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), offers a clarion
call to
the US electric utilities to play a more active role in the activities
that
will develop the standards and protocols that will define the “smart
grid. Mr. Owens points out that utilities that will be charged with
meeting
goals associated with demand response, energy efficiency and renewables
must be
actively involved with the standards that are to be developed. And, in
no
uncertain terms, he says “the time to act is now.
