This webinar:
The computing infrastructure of smart grid is important to its performance, reliability, and security. Just as the grid is not wired with parts from the local hardware store, the server and storage components of the smart grid need to meet the resiliency expected of critical infrastructure. It must not become a weak part of smart grid.
We will discuss how computing and databases interact in typical smart grid scenarios, how hardware system are architected just as software components are, and the ways hardware and software have to be en engineered system to be effective. Utilities should be expecting their computing systems to operate as a substation, that is, a series of pre-built, pre-interfaced components that function self-sufficiently, have a degree of fault tolerance, have internal adaptability, and can be remotely monitored. |

These estimates demonstrate the relative value of currently available efficiency improvements for each piece of the power system - generation, delivery and end use. Large opportunities for energy savings are illustrated, especially for end use decisions which are under the customer's direct control.
- Reviews the complexity of the electric delivery system and the difficulites in implementing changes.
The significance of these simple analyses is to provide clear technical insight to new engineers, students, energy policy makers and customers.

This webinar:
Data Centers is a rapidly growing industry experiencing an unprecedented merger of many different technologies from hardware to software, from IT to electric power to cooling. Most engineers are familiar only with some aspects of the data center technologies and do not grasp the "big picture" of the industry.
As data centers grow in size and numbers the demand for power and cooling grows to the point where the centers consume an estimated 1.5-2% of the global electrical energy.
This webinar will address technology fundamentals of data center infrastructures, particularly power and cooling and how these infrastructures are managed by specialized DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) tools.
We will also discuss the type of power distribution architectures involved in designing reliable data centers and the basics of data center operations from the power point of view. Tier diagrams, supply redundancy, emergency power, and PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) will be presented.
Finally emerging technnology trends will be addressed.

HVDC VSC technology has developed extremely quickly and offers many attractive alternatives over the more mature LCC HVDC technology. This introduction to VSC presents the basic VSC system configurations. The operation of VSC technology, VSC control systems, including the flexibility of VSC converters control systems, as well as a comparison of VSC and LCC HVDC technologies will be discussed.
As the simulation of VSC MMC technology presents several EMT simulation challenges, the current status of simulation and model development will be presented. A sample of simulation results discussing the unique issues for start-up and DC line recovery for VSC systems will also be introduced.
While the topic is technical in nature and directed towards power system engineers, others such as system regulators, system and renewable energy developers, and power system operators would benefit from an understanding of VSC HVDC fundamentals. |

When the integration of distributed energy resources increases, more and more distribution power systems may be capable of operating as a microgrid, with the ability to operate in parallel with the grid or as an island. The challenges that utility planning engineers are facing are like never before. Recent major storms in the US blacking out some of the biggest cities in the world are forcing government agencies and utilities to increase reliability and reduce peak demand at the same time.
Opportunities to electrify rural communities via microgrids are gaining significant interest. Before the detailed engineering design of any microgrid, a power system and economic planning study should be performed to determine the optimal techno economical specifications, i.e. location, type and size of devices, optimal operation methodologies, compliance with standards and regulatory agencies, and cost/benefit analysis etc. |

Today, state of the art computer programs have extracted about as much cost as possible in pursuit of competitive designs, while still maintaining the highest standard of quality and reliability. High-temperature in liquid-immersed transformer applications offers a new avenue to explore the possibilities of matching an application with optimized cost and is now one of the few opportunities available for a true step-change in design stategy.
High-temperature design has been around for many years operating on the fringe of the standards and lurking in the background. Since, almost by definition, the standards follow technology rather than lead the development, at some point a critical mass creates the need for a written document to structure and guide the future development of a new technology.
This presentation will discuss a newly published IEEE document that will finally standardize high-temperature liquid-immersed transformers. Complimentary to this new standard is the recently published IEEE document that defines the test procedures for determining the thermal class of an insulation system in a liquid dielectric medium.
Examples of typical and not-so-typical global applications for high-temperature liquid-immersed transformers will also be presented. |
