How to update your Web Page: Tutorial
TUTORIAL

You can make your page a living document  to announce meetings or events as well as letting people know an up to date version of your chapter roster. This Tutorial is a step by step process to show you how.

Update your Page

   Get Your Username and Password
Step 1
Do you know your password and username? In order to update your page you must have these. To get them send an email to the Webmaster.

Get File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program
Step 2

Once you have your username and password you must get an FTP client (program) to download and upload your page to and from the server. Cute FTP and WS-FTP are two popular programs, and if you do not already have them you can get them here

TIPS  Set Up FTP Client to Access Server
Step 3

You might want to create a file to put your downloaded information into

Now that you have your FTP program you must set it up so that you can access the server to download your web page and make your changes. With Cute FTP. With it you can use the "Connection Wizard" (located in the "file" pull down once you are in the program) or the "Site Manager" (also located in the "file" pull down menu). The wizard will ask you for a number of items of information. The only items of information that matter are FTP host address, the username, and the password.

All the information you need to access your page is as follows:

FTP Host Address    ewh.ieee.org
FTP Site username    username (your site username see Step 1)
FTP Site password    password (your site password see Step 1)

Access the Web Server to Download Web Page
Step 4
Once you have inputted the information you are ready to connect to the server. To do this you must be connected to the internet. Next simply click or select connect  on your ftp program to connect to the IEEE server.
The program should go through  a couple of steps and then connect you to the server.

TIPS  Download Page From the Server
Step 5

At this point it might be wise to save a copy of your page as something else like "Original page" or something like that. This is to ensure that you will have your original page should you find a mistake after you have already uploaded it to the server (and erased the original).

At this point you should be connected to IEEE server. The FTP client should have a running log that tells you your username and password were accepted and that you are connected.

Somewhere on your FTP client should be a split screen of some sort. On the left are the files in your computer. On the right are the files on the server. On the server side there should be a number of file icons, a picture file called image31.gif, and a HTML file called index.html. index.html is your PES chapter web page file. To download select the file and choose "Download" from the "Transfer" file, or simply drag the file from the server files to your own. You have successfully downloaded you page.

   Edit and Update Your Page
Step 6
Now that you have downloaded your page, it can now be edited and changed to fit your needs. The ease of this depends on which browser you are using - A more recent version of Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you have Netscape, check and see if you have a version that allows you to edit the page without having to deal with any HTML. To check this go to your "File" menu on your Netscape browser and select "Edit Page" (if you can). This should open up a new page in Netscape that allows you to edit the page with your mouse and keyboard.

TIPS  Upload Information To Server
Step 7

The reason you want upload the document form your desktop is to eliminate any possibility of your file root extensions transfering with the document to the server.

Now that you have edited and updated your page, you are ready to upload it to the server. Make sure that your document is named index.html before proceeding.

Once again you must be connected to the internet. Since you have set up your FTP client to access the IEEE server all you need now is to connect.

Make sure your file is on your computer's desktop before you proceed (see tip left). Once you are connected to the server, all you need is to upload the file, either by dragging it to the right or by selecting "Upload" under the "Transfer" file pulldown.

Disconnect from the server and see if it worked. Check it out on the Web. You can connect to the chapter links page here.
